Mayer Hawthorne covers James Pants

Just when I felt legitimized in discounting Mayer Hawthorne as a buzzer without a lasting sting, he covers James Pants' “Think Moon” and rejuvenates my affinity for his Smokey Robinson-esque croon.

Never been much a James Pants enthusiast, but Hawthorne's treatment of “Thin Moon” transforms the quirky blip-pop of the original into a crawling piano ode – A Strange Arrangement could have used more slow jams like this.

On the flipside, James Pants covers Hawthorne's “Green Eyed Love.” The 45 single will be available for free to the first 200 attendees of the SXSW Stones Throw Showcase March 17 at Speakeasy. The event is sponsored by Converse and Wax Poetics. Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, J. Rocc, Dam-Funk, 14kt and Amir will be DJing the event, spinning 45s strictly. Get there early!

Can't make it to SXSW or too digital for vinyl spins? We got you covered. Buy the mp3s at Stones Throw for a $.99.
