Mean Creek, “Cool Town”

Though we've never rode hard for the city of Boston, more and more we're learning that that might be a mistake. Whether it's Speedy Ortiz or the entire Exploding In Sound roster or bands that filter out through the surrounding environs like Potty Mouth and Pachangacha, there is no shortage of talent coming from the icy Northeast. Mean Creek, the latest in this long line of Mass-ive talent (get it? because Massachusetts?), are just freshly signed to Old Flame Records, and they don't plan on slowing down any time soon. The first single from their upcoming debut album, Local Losers, is a raucous, slacker-type jam that seems to be throwing tribute to the city itself, while foreshadowing the band's recent well-deserved success. In only two and a half minutes, “Cool Town” exhibits that garage-punk can travel as fast as a nervous heartbeat, with guitars slicing through the air like ninja swords, and yet, keeping a cool head is the only way to balance the whole charade. As the main vocals lament, “It's a really cool town but I wish I could leave today,” it comes with an air of knowing self-awareness that makes Mean Creek look softer than they claim. But what's more lovable than a slightly feelingsy garage-punk band? I can hardly think of anything.

You can stream or download “Cool Town” below, then catch the band break out of their cool town at the dates listed. Local Losers will release on Old Flame Records on January 28, 2014.
