Queens-based rapper Akinyemi won acclaim with his summers album, which chronicled one of the most memorable seasons of the 22-year-old rapper’s life. Now, he’s hoping to forge new memories with i am u, a collaborative EP with Brooklyn-based producer ATELLER, who’s from Tel Aviv. Ironically, Akinyemi’s verse on their debut “Things We Do” single is all about the power of memories, specifically how “they can be put in the background of our consciousness, but they won’t ever be forgotten,” as he noted via e-mail.
Akinyemi is joined by Long Island-based artist Leuca on the soulful, jazzy soundscape. Leuca’s verse is short but he still manages to impart wisdom with a “time will never tell unless we dwell in it” gem. “Things We Do” is a strong introduction to i am u, a promising collaboration between the versatile Akinyemi and ATELLER, who embraces being a “genre-less artist.” We have a feeling the project will at least be able to be classified in the “good music” genre, at least.
