Andrew Bernstein, “The Great Outdoors”

Jes Skolnik

Experimental artist and saxophonist Andrew Bernstein (of Horse Lords) is set to release his second solo album, The Great Outdoors. Though Bernstein’s contribution in Horse Lords is obviously meant to play off of the ensemble and is structured and essentially melodic, his solo work hangs in the territory between drone and free jazz, endless circles and rays of sound spinning outward from hypnotic, minimal centers. The closest musical comparison is perhaps Kaoru Abe, who, as Bernstein does, slides between abrasive and meditative so easily that those modes of playing often overlap.

There is a visual component to The Great Outdoors as well.

The Great Outdoors will be available March 18 on Ehse Records. You can stream the title track below.
