Fergus & Geronimo, “Powerful Lovin”

Denton reared its head in music news enough this year for a consideration as to where exactly it is located in the vast Texas borders. For those wondering, it's hundreds of miles north of the artist sanctuary of Austin and another forty miles north of the yippie-ki-yay capital of Dallas. It is home to the band Fergus & Geronimo.

Fergus & Geronimo premiered “Powerful Lovin” this week. a first glimpse into the 2011 release UNLEARN. “Powerful Lovin” has a kinship with the weirdo do wop side of a King Khan & BBQ record. It conjures the bro-ish image of two dudes kicking back with a few beers in the studio, waxing stories about the hot mamas that fell in and out of their lives and the aches that come with those lost embraces. It gets quiet and heavy for a brief moment, as both bros reflect in the air-tight stillness of the studio, then someone belches and everyone goes back to jamming.

If Fergus & Geronimo are products of a backwoods city, strained of the burden of culture, then one might expect UNLEARN to be charmingly juvenile with sheepish, but crude observations that are innocent in their lack of exposure. Are we awaiting a debut that is a rally cry for the good old boys of Middle America? Or are these dudes weirdos hiding amongst the blue jeans and John Deere hats, reveling in the self-inflicted crimes of being an outcast? We shall see.

UNLEARN is out January 18 on Hardly Art.
