Free Cake for Every Creature, “Common Girl”

Hailing from Saratoga Springs, NY and currently living in Philadelphia, Free Cake For Every Creature has been on our radar ever since Double Double Whammy released the band’s excellent debut tape Pretty Good in June 2014. As Katie Bennett’s first full-band release, Pretty Good was a fleshed out version of the minimal indie pop poetry she’d previously been home-recording and releasing quietly on her own. Free Cake’s newest release, “Common Girl”, is an introduction to the ways her songs will continue to evolve on the band’s upcoming album moving songs.

“Common Girl” does what Katie’s known to do best, using simple arrangements to explore lyrical ideas that are more complicated. The song is whimsical but sentimental, Katie’s hushed voice souring above a simple guitar progression. “Listen to your songs / and try to understand them / My mind is clouded, though / I couldn’t sleep again,” she sings. “Oh, I know, that it’s a common problem / Maybe I’m a common girl / After all.” The song is streaming below.
