New Shouts, “Gazes in the Dark”

Ari Spool

The members of New Shouts decided to begin working together after the successful execution of a small recording project: Cor Allen, the singer and guitarist, approached Derek White to help him record and produce a Christmas song that they could give to all of their friends as an audio “Season's Greetings”. The pair felt like it really worked out, and have embarked, with Derek's brother Mario, on this new project, New Shouts, who are recording everything in Derek's living room and releasing it as singles throughout the year.

“Gazes in the Dark” is a pretty cheerful mix of melodies. The twist-and-shout lyrical style and the synths do actually have a slight Yuletide ring, but there's nothing wrong with a little Christmas in June. It feels like a few classic ideas are being twisted and pitch-shifted and massaged with vibrato into a a sweet little pop ditty. The video emphasizes the sock-hop connection, with slowed-down film of such echoing through space on wild trajectories.
