Photay, “Spring Mix 4 Impose”

Post Author:

Remember that surreal scene this season of Broad City when Abbi is traipsing through Brooklyn with an eight-foot stuffed animal, wacked out on a morphine? Ever think, damn the song selection is complementing the shit out of this moment? That was Photay’s “No Sass”. Are you a fan of the FXX series Man Seeking Woman? Photay again with the opening credits track, also known as “Reconstruct” – a track I’ve long considered “the finest electro-pop track you’ve yet to declare your song of the summer.” That was last summer, but it can still apply.

Through an introduction by Chester Anand, aka Ghostly Intl.’s artist Lord RAJA, Photay made the company of Astro Nautico, a New York collective of dance-minded individuals. It began with a submission to the Atlantics Volume 3 compilation and within a year he was at work on his self-titled debut. That debut featured one of the most impressive and curly, white kid afros ever captured on camera as the album artwork. Photay’s debut looked like a collector’s item, the music within further merited the sentiment.

For his spring mix submission to our Friday Night series, Photay awakens with the sound of birds, disrupted by the “Fitter Happier” bot to terrify our core with the announcement of “this mix is a celebration of spring and warm weather.” The ensuing mix is weather channel updates of clear skies with no chance of rain and park walks to Bibio.

Photay left the following commentary for his spring mix:

A collection of fresh rejuvenating tunes to celebrate the beginning of the spring season after a long harsh winter. Unreleased tracks from homies, commentary from Busta Rhymes, disco favorites, and this guy Sasac that I can’t get enough of.
