Sleep Council – “Serious”

British singer-songwriter’s new single is a potent shoegaze anthem

Brought up on the sounds of Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and later, Tame Impala and The War On Drugs, the self-taught multi-instrumentalist Richard Allan (Sleep Council) was always destined to write on the more psychedelic end of the musical spectrum.

His former projects have been supported by The Mahogany Blog among others, and he’s also shared the stage with Bob Dylan. His new single “Serious” is an outpouring of emotion from the British songwriter. The production sounds like that of a full band, while keeping a distinct DIY aesthetic. Mixed by revered producer, Callum Barter (Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile), it’s a unique and distinctive take on modern psychedelic rock and shoegaze.

“Lyrically this song is quite a basic lament about two people damaging each other in relationships, so in a sense it’s like any kind of ‘sad song’ really. Sonically though, it’s a different story. It’s essentially a frantic outpouring of euphoria,” Allan says. Listen to it below via Soundcloud.
