Oakland's Twin Steps are out to capture that same special feeling we get during the introduction of Black Star's “Definition” (hello everybody, recording live from somewhere…) on their latest, “Son of Sam”. That feeling also tends to be synonymous with live Sam Cooke records like One Night Stand! Live at the Harlem Square Club or At the Copa. It's my suspicion the introduction is their way of canonizing “Son of Sam” and aligning themselves to the spirit of Mr. Soul, not David Berkowitz.
With the formalities covered, Twin Steps jam out over a funky backbeat, courtesy of a sampled horns section plucked from the nether-reaches of the Cotton Club. The now fourpiece lace expressive guitar riffing alongside the ghostly horns, while its easy to envsion frontman Drew Pearson doing a Joe Cocker impression, flailing about as he clutches a silver microphone, pelting out his aches and woes. As Twin Steps take to the road this summer, expect many 'a big finishes to “Summer of Sam”, full of sing-a-longs and Pearson falling lifeless into your unsuspecting arms.
