Way Yes, “Ties”

Way Yes

How we think of Ohio, specifically Columbus, is altering again. The state was a beacon of underground hip hop in the early Aughts and sought the scuzz of lo-fi not long after. The latest incantations rousing in the Heart Of It All are the unexpected equatorial vibes of paradises and sunrays. It began with Monster Rally's tropical beat getaways, which sway like hula girls. The latest postcard from Way Yes is pulsing with ethio-percussion and a jamboree whoa-whoas.

The jubilations in “Ties” offset the grim musings on what happens to our things after we're gone, which is only sorta depressing for Way Yes. The hint of black humor in discarding ties and bowels, is easier to stomach when it's accompanied by an enlivened backbeat that makes the prodding guitars less funereal.
