Yppah, “Little Flag”

Ninja Tune‘s melody-making messiah Yppah, aka Joe Corrales Jr., has dropped a refreshing, new tune called “Little Flag” after a brief hiatus from formally released material.

Well worth the wait, it’s a careening exploration of musical history ranging from hypnogogic shoegaze to some slightly crazed kraut. Accented by noodly synths and a murmuring bassline, the entire song has a whimsical, end-of-summer sort of feel that will set the mood for any dusky, sunset-drenched evening.

But what makes it even dreamier is that Corrales’s psychedelic past is also extremely apparent, as the song is spun around a series of interweaving refrains and far-out, reverb-heavy vocal samples. Finished off by easy percussion and a few ominous dub wubs, it’s a lush, sparkling journey through a star-studded and distinctly Southern Californian future.

Like what you hear? San Diego friends can check out the beginning of his fall tour tonight at Soda Bar.
