Chicago’s minimalist art-rock group Disappears will be releasing a fifth full-length, Irreal, early next year. The first single off the album, “Another Thought”, finds the band in its sparsest, most experimental territory yet, a continuation of their tendency towards reinvention. Racing drumbeats of different textures cycle through a softly whirring synth space, as the vocals hover above, oriented around a single low note. When the beat cuts out, we’re left in a pool of hazy, unsettled, near-white noise punctuated by human voices.
Irreal is due out January 19 via Kranky. Stream “Another Thought” below.
