Last year on the Garbage tour, Shirley Manson brought out Marissa Paternoster from Screaming Females, who were billed on the tour until Paternoster came down with mono, to play with her on the Patti Smith song “Because the Night.” One intrepid fan thought to catch the moment for YouTube, and the video is such a fucking fun watch, especially given the heartwarming preamble that Manson gives in honor of not only Paternoster, but Smith and all female guitar players, may the baby Jesus anoint them all. Though the opening band has changed to IO Echo for Garbage's 2013 tour, the alt-rockers still found an opportunity to bring Paternoster back on stage last night at the Wellmont Theatre in New Jersey to perform the cover again.

According to Garbage, the Patti Smith cover was recorded by the band with Screaming Females and will be released on a limited edition 7″ on Record Store Day, which is April 20 this year. That is a must-have, as far as I'm concerned. Garbage is playing a sold-out show at Terminal 5 tomorrow night, March 22, in New York. More Paternoster sightings are sure to be in store.
