The Ruins of Fort Totten

By Nate Dorr » Fort Totten, located in Bayside, Queens, used to be an active fort and continues to be the official headquarters of the U.S. Army Reserve's U.S. 77th Division, but it's largely been a public park since 1974. The last 35 years have allowed a lot of time for the decomposition of those interiors that don't usually get shown during guided tours. As Nate Dorr explains it, "there are tours of the clean part of the battlements, and plenty of uncleaned, non tour-accessed ruins in the woods."

With the exception of the Army Reserve Center, Fort Totten was turned over to the City of NY in 1995. It was not a public park in 1975.

This photo essay is awesome. We found a place like this by the Thames in London recently. They're knocking down it down to build flats before we get the chance to apply for an arts grant from Prince Charlie. That's London.
