sans temp morts

NYC: Sans Temps Morts

Sans Temp Morts is Nate Dorr’s weekly New York City events guide. This week with giant Impose summer show, plus Matt & Kim, Ponytail, High Places, Oneida, The Breeders, Monotonix, People, Talibam!, Cutter, Shy Child, Team Robespierre, Japanther, Ninjasonik, Elf Power, Chairlift, Abe Vigoda.

There’s some kind of an adage to the effect of: not many copies of the early Velvet Underground records were sold, but everyone that did buy one started a band. Likewise, it now seems like everyone who was hanging around Todd P shows over the last few years has gone and started booking their own. As well as occasionally adopting
:: his trademark manner
:::: of listing
:::::: who is playing
:::::::: at any given show.
To Todd’s credit it seems like this was always part of his intent: never to take over Brooklyn DIY but to jump start it and hand it off (see also: the PA-lending service he’s been working on). Now, despite ongoing claims of “taking it easy for a few months”, his show listings are full as ever with the contributions of his successors. Of course, many more go unannounced even on his list, both from those successors and plenty of others old and new. Together, this makes for more options for good shows in the city’s lofts, basements, bars, and living rooms (even occasionally in licensed venues. weird, right?) than seemingly at any point since I moved here. All of the following are excellent sources, who I will attempt to incorporate here, but whose own individual sites will always be the most up-to-date sources of information.

Entertainment4Every1 — I’ve already been giving these guys a lot of attention as they’ve been extremely busy — and have kept STM busy — since spring, with no signs of slowing down.
Sleep When Dead — Recently picking up momentum it seems, but in fact Joe Ahern has been throwing shows for years now, since long before he worked with Todd actually, and even before his previous booking pseudonym Rats of NIMH. His latest flurry of events are often in new and unusual spaces like Less Artists More Condos in the West Village (!) and Magicland, above the Roebling Tea Room.
Bikes in the Kitchen — Steady dealers in excellent shows. Nothing planned at the moment, but this is sure to change quickly.
Strength in Numbers — Also picking up speed right now with a series of promising shows spanning the summer.
Mike 3000 — doesn’t do stuff all that often, but when he does? Epic. Remember the Friday the 13th Zombie Party? Yeah.

You should do this too. It isn’t so difficult.

New Venue Watch 2k8: (Le) Poisson Rouge is a new 800-capacity spot opening up on Bleecker Street. Rare for that area is the eye-catching curation, which includes nearly-upon-us dates by ex-Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes’ A Hawk and Hacksaw, and Baltimore electronic innovators Matmos and Leprechaun Catering. Promising developments, my friends.

At the same time, Tribecca non-profit art-space the Tank has been forced to leave its current location by the end of the month due to, according to Brooklyn Vegan, “damage caused by massive plumbing problems, compounded by irreconcilable issues with the building’s owner, [creating] a costly, unwelcome and untenable situation”. It’ll be the fourth move for a space only five years old, first to a transitional home in August, and again to a hopefully permanent spot in 2009. They’re not the only experimental art space seeking a permanent home: Issue Project Room, though less plagued by problems, is also seeking a larger, more permanent home, after less than a year in their current location

Now, it’s a little beyond the usual scope of STM, but it seems worthy noting that our Baltimore friends and crazy people over at Wham City are holding their yearly bash from July 17 to 20. Yes, Whartscape has now been stretched out into an absurd four nights and two entire days. The time to get tickets is now, as this sold out last year, and Bmore is getting more attention now than ever. Like, there was a Rolling Stone article in May. Rolling Stone. Anyway

LISTINGS

Wednesday, 09 July ::

Avant-pop tendencies matched with probable (or confirmed) jazz backgrounds and technical instrumental skill: People, is the one I know well out of these, an ever-reaching mix of precision chaos and tantalizing almost-catchiness, but Philadelphia’s Ugh God seems like a good bet for unique and lovely pop-like strangeness too. Pak headlines. At Cakeshop, 152 Ludlow, btwn Stanton and Rivington. 8pm doors, $6.

FREE: Shellshag, the Rabbles, Lo Moda, Kyp Malone, I Love You Airlines, and Bad Blood at Goodbye Blue Monday, 9pm.
FREE: Folk/twang: The Avett Brothers at Rockefeller Park, Battery Park City, 7pm.

+Crystal Stilts at Southpaw
+Fleet Foxes at Bowery Ballroom. 8pm doors, $14.
+Feist and Jauna Molina at the Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West and 9th St. 7:30pm, $35.

Thursday, 10 July ::

Newer (to my knowledge) booking power Strength in Numbers has a show at classic home-venue the Silent Barn, with what promises to be a very fun collection of pop esoterica: perfect lo-fi noise-pop from Alabama’s P.S. Eliot, almost video-gameish guitar instrumentals from Each Other’s Mothers, awkward/charming and elaborately embellished synth confections from Taigaa!, Little Lungs, and ever-lovely folk-tinged tales from Air Waves. 915 Wycoff at Hancock, Ridgewood, L to Halsey.

Frenzied noise (guitar, percussive, and electronic respectively) courtesy of E4E1: Cutter, Necking, and Crime Novels. And Destroy Tokyo, who I couldn’t tell you anything about. Not because I’m sworn to secrecy or anything, I just can’t find their MySpace. At Death By Audio, 49 S. 2nd St btwn Kent and Wythe, Williamsburg. 8pm doors, $tba.

FREE: St. Vincent at Castle Clinton, 7pm.

+Fleet Foxes at Union Hall, 5th Ave and Union, Park Slope. 8pm doors, $12.
+Boris and Torche at Webster Hall. 7pm doors, $18.

Friday, 11 July ::

A varied and very odd bill from Sleep When Dead: Mexican faux-60s pop-rockers Los Fancy Free, purveyors of varied lo-fi electronic noise-pop Blue and Red 3D Spectacular, Brooklyn keyboardist and glockenspiel player Glockabelle (recently a touring Fiery Furnace), South Carolina noise tweakers Bald Ego, and Psychic Friends Hotline. At Magicland, above the Roebling Tea Room, 143 Roebling St. at Metropolitan, Williamsburg. 8pm doors, $7.

Classic rock via E4E1: Boogie Boarder, Purple Rhinestone Eagle, Barking Spiders, and Efft. At Death By Audio, 49 S. 2nd St btwn Kent and Wythe, Williamsburg. 8pm doors, $tba.

Yep, Rappers-on-the-pulse-of-Brooklyn Ninjasonik, in addition to having a Myspace, Gmail, and Facebook (though no Friendster), now have an EP. And a release party for it, with punk/rap/rock compatriots Japanther, Juiceboxx, and the So So Glos. At the Music Hall of Williamsburg, 66 North Sixth Street at Wythe, Williamsburg. 8:30 doors, $10.

Classic Athens, GA Elephant 6 psych-pop alumns Elf Power have a new album and are back on tour. Rather excitingly for such an established — and still untarnished! — act, they’re playing the Lower East Side’s intimate cafe/bar/record store/venue Cake Shop. With Hum 1, Cut Off Your Hands, and Hermit Thrushes. 152 Ludlow, btwn Stanton and Rivington. 8pm doors, $7.

FREE: This could be the highlight off the South Street Seaport shows, and those are typically quite well curated (if crowded). L.A. / Brooklyn / L.A. for maximum bi-coastal power. Smell-favorite (well, often now everyone’s favorite) lo-fi punk duo No Age, space pop oddities Telepathe, and avant-rock weirdos Abe Vigoda at South Street Seaport. 7pm.
FREE: The Breeders at Other Music, 15 East 4th Street at Lafayette. 8pm. Um, yeah. Get there early.

Saturday, 12 July :: Todd P / Impose / Crashin’ In Enormo Outdoor Party. Obviously I am biased, but this will be epic. Many of these bands would command any normal bill they were dropped into:
Oneida — Long running and ever changing Brooklyn psych-rock, sometimes operating as brisk noise-pop, sometimes as prog-ish long-form key blasts.
High Places — Brooklyn’s lush, polyrhythmic pop favorites, now working with Thrill Jockey: a singles comp will be out on the 22nd, with the long-awaited album debut to follow in the early fall.
Titus Andronicus — Recent buzz-gatherers in the angry-without-being-really-punk rock camp.
Shy Child — drums and keytar as ultimate dancepunk duo.
Chinese Stars — jabbing Providence art rock.
Ponytail — Surely I have raved about them enough lately. The new album is an excellent expansion of their prior promise, and they seem to be adjusting gracefully to the larger crowds. As gracefully as a band this uttery spazzy can adjust, at least.
Vivian Girls — Simple and effective lo-fi garage punk wrapped in a dream pop haze. Now attracting unsurprisingly extensive attention.
Abe Vigoda — Tweaked-out but oddly catchy west coast rock
Crystal Antlers — Hazy west coast psych with equal parts noise squall and classic rock drive. And they have “Crystal” in the name.
Knyfe Hyts — Summer metal turning big beat funk.
Ninja Sonik — No one else can throw a party this big by rapping about how tight their pants are.
Soft Circle — Ambient/percussive shimmer from Scott Herren’s Eastern Developments label.
Soiled Mattress and the Springs — Final show ever!
Chairlift — Pop. Executed with flair and finesse.
+Mystery guests
400 Carroll St btwn Bond St & Nevins St, Gowanus. F/G to Carroll. Noon, $10.

Hand-related pop music courtesy of E4E1 and Todd P: UK/NZ’s Cut Off Your Hands, who anyone who was at CMJ probably remembers from the six or so day parties they played in about two days, and Brooklyn’s Bear Hands. At Flarket Flotel, 1142 Myrtle at Broadway, Bushwick.

FREE: Glockabelle , Gay Agenda, Dan Fishback, Joseph Keckler, Erin Markey, Ben Kerrick, Eric Dean Scott, and Direct Current at the Battle Ranch Annex. All I know about this is that it’s in a loft. And free. 405 Johnson Ave, 2nd Floor, East Williamsburg (L to Morgan). 8pm.

FREE: Beth Orton at the Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West and 9th St. 7:30.

+Fuck Yeah Fest 2008: the Circle Jerks, Dillinger Four, Matt & Kim , Team Robespierre, and Monotonix at the Highline Ballroom. Basically all the bands that’ll be at Exit the next night, minus Japanther. 5:30pm doors, $17.
+Talibam! at Deitch Projects Gallery
+Bloody Panda, Tombs, Krallice, Wetnurse at Death By Audio, 49 S. 2nd St btwn Kent and Wythe, Williamsburg. 8pm doors, $tba.

Sunday, 13 July ::

Fuck Yeah Fest 2008 tour kickoff! The tour is aptly named. Matt & Kim’s keys/drums punk songs are the essence of simplicity, but they push each one to the limit with sheer enthusiasm, and have struck a chord. Team Robespierre assault their fist-pumping electro-hardcore with similar fervor, except there are five of them all throwing themselves into the fray at once. And then Israeli rockers Monotonix… What if Zepplin played small punk spots and freaked the hell out the entire time? This is the question Monotonix seem to be seeking to answer (albeit on this tour at larger venues). Finally, Japanther have spent most of the early century making two-piece lofi punk rock as dazzlingly anthemic as possible. Plus the Circle Jerks and Dillinger Four are headlining this thing, and the night will be rounded out with art, stand-up comedians and whatever ele ca be squeezed into Greenpoint’s Club Exit. 147 Greenpoint Ave at Manhattan Ave. 8pm doors, $18.

FREE: The Breeders, Matt & Kim, and the Whip at McCarren Pool. Ah yes, another year of lounging in the pool bottom, slip’n’sliding, and dodgeball. And, of course, quite well-curated music. Opens at noon.

Pop/punk via Sleep When Dead: Briskly catchy Brooklyn/PA electro-pop duo Slingshot Dakota (a little like a new, young Mates of State without the whole gooey husband/wife thing. I am charmed), two examples of young midwestern pop-punk — Indiana’s Native and Michigan’s Victor! Fix The Sun — and Brooklyn’s Get Bent. At Olivio’s Refridgerator Repair, S. 5th and Bedford, Williamsburg. 7pm doors, $tba.

+Titus Andronicus, Ponytail, Abe Vigoda, and War on Drugs at the Mercury Lounge. 8pm doors, $10.

Monday, 14 July ::

A Hawk and Hacksaw began as a post-Neutral Milk Hotel project of drummer Jeremy Barnes, who originally played percussion and accordion (simultaneously) with a violinist, but has since expanded into a gyspy-folk tinged quartet. At the new Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker at Thompson, West/Middle Village. 7:30 doors, $15.

Tuesday, 15 July ::

FREE: Christian Fennesz and Ryuichi Sakamoto at World Financial Center, performing the entirety of last year’s compelling collaboration Cendre in its US premier. 9pm.

E4E1: Necking, High Castles (SF), Yukon (Baltimore), Fang Island, and Slasher Risk. At Death By Audio, 49 S. 2nd St btwn Kent and Wythe, Williamsburg. 8pm doors, $tba.

+Power Douglas and Jucifer at the Knitting Factory.
+Ratatat at Music Hall of Williamsburg. 8pm, $20.

Wednesday, 16 July ::

Avant: Ryan Jewell, Nate Wooley, and Jesse Kudler most likely playing some combination of improvised noisy/droning electronics coupled with Wooley’s uniquely noisy/droning trumpet technique. Likely watchword: texture. I bet this will be great. Plus “harmoniacal” jazz-noise troublemakers Talibam! (Kevin Shea’s disjointedly sprinting drums vs. Matt Mottel’s violent synthesizing) is opening. At the Issue Project Room, in the Old American Can Factory, 232 3rd Street at 3rd Ave, 3rd Floor, Gowanus/Park Slope.

E4E1: Joey Casio, Wet Hair (ex Racoo-oo-oon), Sewn Leather, Teengirl Fantasy, Social Junk, and Big Nurse. At Death By Audio, 49 S. 2nd St btwn Kent and Wythe, Williamsburg. 8pm doors, $tba.

FREE: Zebulon under the Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn side). With Sharon Van Etten, Colin Stetson, the Charles Gayle Trio, and Stuart Bogie / Superhuman Happiness. 6 to 9pm.

Thursday, 17 July ::

Far away, in Baltimore, Whartscape begins.

FREE: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at Castle Clinton
FREE: Fiery Furnaces at East River Park

Friday, 18 July ::

In Deerhoof , punk frenzy, virtuousic instrumental skill, pop cuteness, and a dada surreality combine in one of my long-running favorite live acts. And they’ve just been restored to a four piece. AND they’ve got a new album on the way. This would be plainly unmissable wee I not bound for Baltimore that week. With the Metropolis Ensemble at the Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West and 9th St. 7:30.

The Mae Shi, Imaad Wasif, and dd/mm/yyyy at Cakeshop, 152 Ludlow, btwn Stanton and Rivington. 8pm doors, $6.

Matmos and Leprechaun Catering at Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker at Thompson, West/Middle Village. 7:30 doors, $15.

Ninja Sonik, Knyfe Hyts, Red Dawn 2, at Death By Audio, 49 S. 2nd St btwn Kent and Wythe, Williamsburg. 8pm doors, $tba.

FREE: Peter Evans Quartet at Zebulon, Wythe and Metropolitan, Williamsburg. 9pm.
