Eye & Ear Fest III, Day 1

Photos by Joe Perez » Pendu's Third Eye and Ear Festival celebrated the eclecticism of New York's emerging music. If there was any method to the madness of the range displayed by the nearly forty acts that performed, it was beyond our ears.

A number of bands on day one recalled some blend of revivalist new wave beats and starkly minimalist big beat, though not necessarily at the same time. Living Days falls in with the former and Follower with the latter but in between there was White Ring, as well as the increasingly interstellar synth explorations of Love Like Deloreans and Fostercare's gothy dance samples.

Off in different planes altogether were Effi Briest's choppy psych rock and Liturgy's waves of black metal, along with propulsive newer acts like Pop. 1280 and Twin Stumps. Throw in Hexbreaker Quintet's placid noise ruminations punctured by clarion trumpets and you get a feel for the odd grab bag that gives this festival its inimitable hue, one we hope it can show off for years to come.
