The Night Marchers, Dan Sartain, and Mrs. Magician at Glasslands Gallery

Post Author:

On Saturday, March 2nd, San Diego's Mrs. Magician and The Night Marchers along with Birmingham, AL's Dan Sartain performed a sold out show at Brooklyn's Glasslands Gallery.

It was the first time I've ever caught Mrs. Magician and they played a solid, tight set. They were followed by Dan Sartain, who barely took a break in between songs. He played one song after another in rapid succession. When he did pause in between songs, he complimented Mrs. Magician and The Night Marchers and kept stating how terrible he was. Despite what he said, Dan Sartain was the opposite. This was definitely one of the best performances that I've seen from him over the years.

Sartain was followed by The Night Marchers, the band featuring singer/guitarist, John Reis (Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, The Sultans), guitarist Gar Wood (Hot Snakes, Beehive and the Barracudas), bassist Tommy Kitsos (CPC Gangbangs) and drummer Jason Kourkounis (The Delta 72, Hot Snakes). The band played only four east coast dates (Philadelphia, Baltimore, Brooklyn and Boston) in support of their latest record, Allez Allez, which is out now on Reis' Swami Records (Sartain has released albums in the past on Swami and Mrs. Magician's debut album was released on the label). Although it's been a few years since I've caught The Night Marchers live (at the 2010 Village Voice Siren Festival), it was wonderful to see the band in a fairly intimate space. They were ferocious, amusing and the audience members were their prisoners for 35 minutes (according to Reis).

According to Gar Wood, who was selling their merchandise after their performance, The Night Marchers' split 7″ with Mrs. Magician will be available on Record Store Day (Saturday, April 20th).
