Alexander Lewis, "Off Guard"

Post Author: Andre G

Alexander Lewis is known for his high-energy trap compositions, but don’t get it confused — there’s more in his arsenal. You can’t work with acts like Tokimonsta, Mr. Carmack, and Brasstracks without a bit of range, and Lewis is showing some of it off. The Oakland-born producer exercised perhaps the most literal usage of a title in a while with “Off Guard,” a smooth, intricately-crafted single from his upcoming, as-of-yet-unnamed EP.

The track’s island-influenced drum programming makes you want to get up and two-step, which is an intriguing departure from the more intense tracks in Lewis’ catalog. That said, his signature horns are still intact, showcasing the mastery with brass that has won him acclaim in recent years. “Off Guard” also features a versatility that will hopefully be on display more often in his future work, especially his upcoming project set to be released via Lowly Palace.
