Deerhunter perform “Duplex Planet” on “Live at 9:30”

Atlanta psych-pop stalwarts Deerhunter are currently touring the United States in support of their most recent LP, the decidedly dreamy, critically-acclaimed Fading Frontier. If you’re undecided as to whether or not you want to go check out the band’s endlessly entertaining show, we have an exclusive live video of Bradford Cox and company performing “Duplex Planet” at Washington D.C.’s legendary 9:30 Club, courtesy of the new series “Live at 9:30.” “Live at 9:30” is a music and variety show bringing live performances from musicians, comedians, filmmakers & more to public television.

The performance opens with Cox describing the inspiration behind the song: “Here’s a song about a disappearance of a large group of assisted-living patients,” he calmly explains before the band launches into the groove-centric tune, guitars chiming behind Cox’s wistful vocals. As the band plays on, stage lights dancing around them while the crowd sways in unison, it’s hard to avoid being lured into a trance-like state; the rhythm section chugging along beneath hypnotic vocal melodies and washed out, sparkling guitars creates a dreamy atmosphere befitting Cox’s lyrics: “Dreaming on the way to work // Dreaming all the way across the road.”
