Dilly Dally, “Candy Mountain”

Post Author: Amelia Pitcherella

Dilly Dally have been around since 2009, pioneering a murky brand of punk rock and playing shows on the Toronto noise scene. They’ve only released a handful of recordings since starting out, but what they have released has been pure gold, and it looks like there’s a lot to look forward to from the group in the future.

The video for “Candy Mountain” is real eye candy, a collage of high-definition shots with plenty of glitter and neon pink. Singer Katie Monks is pictured alongside bandmate Liz Ball, crooning into her microphone on an eerie set with a gang of raccoon-eyed friends always lingering in the background. The video is unsettling, half shrouded in darkness and constantly shifting in space so that we never really know what’s going on, yet it’s aesthetically breathtaking—mirroring the song itself, which runs the line between heavy and poppy, its refrain of “If everybody’d shut up, I would too” lyrically dark but melodically irresistible. Between the fog and glitter and bright guitar hooks, it’s clear that there’s some magic happening here, and Dilly Dally is at the core of it.

Dilly Dally just released their Candy Mountain 7″, available now from Fat Possum. You can catch them in New York for CMJ this week, and they’ll be playing some dates in Canada beginning next month.
