Blanche Blanche Blanche, “Love Weapon”

Blanche Blanche Blanche is one of the projects of the many-monikered Vermont mountain man Zach Phillips. Other projects of Phillips' include Bruce Hart, Horse Boys, Motion, Sord, Nals Goring, and I'm pretty sure there are at least three or four more that I can't recall. This makes three people in my mental-encyclopedia universe who are named Zach and have a million project names to remember (the others being Zach Nelson and Zach Hill). This, of course, is very confusing. At least Zach Phillips is on the opposite coast of the other two.

Also, Zach Phillips is the only one who you would classify as making strictly pop music. 2wice 2wins (OSR Tapes001) is Blanche Blanche Blanche's fourth release. They have also tape on Night People called Songs of, and Shawn Reed is going to release a vinyl of theirs, too, and so is Massachusett's Feeding Tube Records and so is France's La Station Radar. Jeez. 2wice 2wins is a split cassette with Bruce Hart, and it's kind of a light-heated freak-soul masterpiece. Phillips and his partner in this project, Sarah Smith, play almost-cheesy and very broad-soundng '80s synths with a good hit of funky bass, and write really intriguing pop-melodies over them. Sarah's voice is deadpan in a really perfect way. The last song on the BBB-side is an epic and exceedingly accurate cover of T'Pau's “Heart and Soul”, if that gives you an idea. Better yet, listen to “Love Weapon” below, duh.

And here's the video for “Alots B4”

Also, if that wasn't enough, view this awesome video Zach made for another project called Motion. I love 2012: people who are super-productive can nail their shit onto the internet as fast as it comes out, and we can all sit back and watch it like an episode of Three's Company.
