And the Bad Sex winner is…

Post Author:
Rowan Somerville

Every year Britain's Literary Review hands out a “Bad Sex Award” for the most appallingly written sex scenes in a novel. Nominees for the award included notable books like Freedom by Jonathan Franzen and Mr. Peanut by Adam Ross. The winner was Rowan Somerville, an Irishman who was nominated for scenes in The Shape of Her. I don't think Somerville's book is ready for the U.S. yet.

On receiving the honor, Somerville said:

“What an honour to share a list with Jonathan Franzen and Christos Tsiolkas. There is nothing more English than bad sex, so on behalf of the entire nation I would like to thank you.”

Adam Ross, whose novel involves an obese wife, said that Franzen would not even acknowledge the nomination when the two met recently. But Ross hinted at who he would like to read a sex scene by:

The real question is this: when will Marisha Pressl and Nicole Krauss write a sex scene together? They are total babes. I would seriously get into reading that.
