Championing the release of the new Vacationer album Relief via Downtown Records, Kenny Vasoli penned the following exclusive Week in Pop guest selections:

Fonzworth Bentley ft. Kanye West, Andre 3000 & Sa Ra, “Everybody”

How did I not hear this when it was released? I found out about it through a Pete Rock post. Crazy good track, produced by Sa Ra, features Kanye and one of Andre 3000’s hottest verses…in 2008? What the hell?!

Bob James, “Dream Journey”

Classic heat from 1975! I’m crazy about this recording.

Ricky Eat Acid, “In My Dreams We’re Almost Touching”

Sam Ray nailed it on this one. Ambient house perfection. Features a sample of a girl performing a Drake cover on piano. I can never get enough of this track.

Madlib, “J’s Day Theme #3 (Support)”

I’m an enormous fan of Otis Jackson Jr.’s music, and luckily there is so much to discover. Once I found this Beat Konducta 5-6, paying tribute to J Dilla, I couldn’t put it down. His beats are in full force here.

Jeff Rosenstock, “USA”

Throwing in a punk cut! Jeff released this record on New Years Day this month and I’m glad it’s attracting so much attention. This song hits the spot. It deals with a current frustration that tons of us can relate to. Read the lyrics. It definitely scratches an itch for me.

Brian Warren (Weatherbox), “I Was Young When I Left Home”

Brian has been one of my favorite songwriters for quite a while. I consider him criminally underrated. This live Bob Dylan cover gives me chills every time.

Barry White, “I Love You More Than Anything”

Barry White is a huge inspiration for my music-making, especially the album Can’t Get Enough. This groove, bassline, the strings, the harp, and that Rhodes just holding long notes in the verse drive me wild.

Dirty Art Club, “Into The Spiritual”

Under the radar, incredibly talented beat-maker.

Malik Abdul-Rahmaan, “Love Scene”

Another extremely gifted beat-smith!

Corridor, “Le grand écart”

My girlfriend found this record on a year-end list. This song is an ear-worm, I enjoy it a lot. I also like that the title translates to “The large gap.”
