emberghost, “When You’re a Star”

2016 has been a momentous year to say the least. From surprise sporting victories, to tragic deaths of icons, to the election of a reality show hobbyist as President, it’s been a wild ride. It was the last instance that caused a wave in the Indie Rock scene with the return of Portland band emberghost. Yesterday, the group, once hot names in Portland’s scene, dropped “When You’re A Star.“ The group hadn’t performed as emberghost in four years and hasn’t been a full band since the 2010 passing of co-vocalist/keyboardist Sarah Jennings, but decided that Donald Trump’s hateful presence was the kind of moment that makes you call up your day ones.

On “When You’re A Star,” the band—currently building as LA-based Lone Kodiak–took odds with Trump’s blatant sexism—and continuous denial of it. Over a surging bass riff, the band rails against Trump, with the sarcastic “when you’re a star you can do anything you want” chastisement. Though the song ends with “not my president,” the band says it’s for everyone.

Over e-mail, they note, “if you’re a Trump supporter or voted for him, we hope you can acknowledge that women deserve better than this, and may this song be your anthem when he breaks every promise he lead you to believe.”

And then denies making the promise. Proceeds from the sales of “When You’re A Star” go to RAINN, one of the Nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organizations. You can purchase here, and stream below.
