Illecism, “A Love > The Trees”

When I get into conversations in Sacramento regarding some of the dopest rappers in the greater area, one of the names that is always tossed out is Illecism.

I never questioned the taste of those who suggested Illecism, it was obvious the dude is talented, but until his Sun Don't Chill EP, I had yet to hear a byte-worthy reason to blog about Illecism. The beat on “A Love > The Trees” rides a tender acoustic strum and cherub “la-la-las” that create a cloud 9 for Illecism to count the reasons as to why his girl is the apple of his eye. For all the rap songs about love, it's rare that an emcee elects to express his admiration for the girl that puts his mind at ease, as all our favorites tend to be about looking at front doors, sweating us for our dividends and passing us by. Illecism is not ashamed nor timid to close his song with “I love you more than all my pads and pencils and all the trees in Sacramento” – and there's a shit ton of trees here. I'm also a fan of the motivation behind the song's title being revealed in two closing bars, buried in the mix during the closing fadeout moments.

Illecism's Sun Don't Chill EP is available here for $5. In addition, he's got a gang of releases and mixtapes available, some for free download on his website.
