Little Big League, besides being staples of the noisy portion of the Philly scene, just popped up on the radar upon the announcement of a split 7” with Connecticut '90s-throwbackers Ovlov. Now, Michelle Zauner, the lead singer of Little Big League, has announced a solo cassette under the moniker of Japanese Breakfast. The cassette is called American Sound & Where Is My Great Big Feeling, and its first single, “The Woman That Loves You”, just premiered over at Brooklyn Vegan.

The song is a stark deviation from Little Big League's guitar-based indie rock, as it finds Zauner exploring the upbeat end of the '80s new wave sound. “The Woman That Loves You” initially appeared on a split single with Foxing, but has been re-recorded and beefed up for the new cassette. Despite the presence of digital sounds, Zauner’s voice is pushed to the front of the mix, at once making the track more physical and more intimate. When Zauner sings “We’ll stay together for the weekend, honey/The weekend, babe,” the song takes a nearly Fleetwood Mac turn before Zauner peppers it with playfulness and 80s-nostalgia via her grainy vocal affect. There’s a heavy dosage of synth cheesiness, but Zauner keeps the song genuine and true—a good sign from a burgeoning voice in indie.

American Sound & Where Is My Great Big Feeling will be released on July 25 via Seagreen Records.
