My highly publicized affection for Apocalypse Now definitely influenced the way I looked at No Valley's debut track on first glance. How could anyone dislike a Clash-AN mashup tribute? However, after spending some time with it, “Charlie Don't Surf” has jangle garagepop down to a very precise science. It takes its influence from a famous scene from the Heart of Darkness remake, a clip which you can catch below, and it catapults itself through the rock-and-roll woods, harkening back influence to The Clash's take on the infamous line. Meeting somewhere in the middle, the project of New Paltz's Wayne Memmer is drenched in Americana and twitchy rhythms. It's a fresh revival to some older influences.
