You can say whatever you want about Sunn O))), some people claim genius, others say shtick. I received a postcard from Southern Lord (the record label co-owned by Sunn mastermind Stephen O'Malley) stating that their upcoming album Monoliths & Dimensions is “probably the most musical piece we've done & also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we've laid to tape”.
Always ones to give credence to the idea that “nothing succeeds like excess”, the band has taken on the help a one-time of Sun Ra/Coltrane colaborator, French and English horns, and of course, the ever necessary Viennese womans choir for the upcoming album.
Inspired by avant-garde composers, and acting as “an homage to the sonic power of implied & actual orchestrated structure of our heroes: Earth, Celtic Frost, Entombed”, the four track, 54 minute album might be a beast that rivals, or possibly trumps their 2006 collaboration with Boris, Altar. Whatever the case, the track list, and the personal already make this pretty much undeniably epic.
