The recent release of Dark Dark Dark‘s soundtrack for the film Flood Tide didn’t feature much in the way of singer Nona Marie Invie’s vocals, but maybe that’s because she was busy working on a new synth-driven project with Marijuana Deathsquads’ Mark McGee and Joint Custody’s Fletcher Barnhill. The new band, called RONiiA (pronounced Row-nee-a), digitally released a beautifully ethereal self-titled LP earlier this week, along with an equally beautiful video for the lead single, “Last Words”.

The band recently told PopMatters the concept behind the band’s name and mission:

“I got the idea for the band name from the Astrid Lindren book Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. It’s a story about a young girl, the daughter of a viking robber who will someday become the leader of a band of robbers. Every summer she has to go out into the woods alone and fend for herself. It’s a really beautiful story about independence and exploring your own relationship with the natural world. I wanted to make a record that embodies the spirit of Ronia, being a wild free thing in nature.”
