THANKS Talks New Music, Inspiration, and MSG

Post Author: Meredith Schneider

Copenhagen’s electronic pop duo THANKS – comprised of Anders SG and Anders Reinholdt, the driving forces behind Alphabeat – has been steadily rolling out noteworthy – dare we say it, hit-worthy – tracks. Their single “Dizzy” hit the UK’s Spotify Viral Chart, while their latest dance-inducing track – “Livin’ My Life” – dropped recently, sampling Jill Scott’s “Golden” to mass appeal. Their fun blend of 80’s/90’s pop style and vast knowledge of pop music in the modern space has bred them a lot to be proud of. We got to throw some questions their way, and get a brief glimpse into the world of THANKS.

How did the name THANKS come about?

Because the nature of the band and the music is very collaborative we wanted something that was almost an anti-band name, something universal. With this name we’re saying thanks, from the get-go, to our musical influences, our collaborators and our listeners! We weren’t going for a super deep name, to us happy has always been cool. THANKS is both something straight from the heart and sincere but it’s also like “see you later … peace out.”

What’s something you think everyone should know about you?

We are Anders & Anders and we are THANKS. Ultimately the music comes from us, but the creative process is very collaborative. We have a studio in Copenhagen where we write songs and music with a lot of our friends, and just all kinds of people with different musical backgrounds, who are up for coming to our studio and have some fun.

I see that you were recently on the top 10 UK Spotify Viral Chart. What was that like?

Yes, our 1st track “Dizzy” was on the top 10 UK Spotify Viral Chart. Super exciting for us to see people reacting to our music like that, same kind of feeling we get playing the music live.

Talk to me about your track, “Livin’ My Life.” What was the process behind creating the song?

We stumbled upon an acapella for Jill Scott’s Golden on youtube. We didn’t know the original song but to us the vocal sounded like a hook for a disco song. So we finished Livin’ My Life before listening to Jill Scott’s version which is superb btw. It’s kind of our take on contemporary house like “Need U (100%)” and “I Got U” by Duke Dumont. At the same time we have a chopped up, funky Nile Rodgers inspired vibe going on.

What do you want people to take away from listening to “Livin’ My Life?”

It’s a feel good track, something you can dance to, and Jill Scott’s lyrics are really great, super simple and powerful: “I’m taking my own freedom, putting it in my song, singing loud n strong, groovin’ all day… I’m livin’ my life like it’s golden.”

Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

Generally artists who mix up all kinds of things, that you can hear and feel they have an emotional connection with, acts like KLF, Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, Mark Ronson, Major Lazer.

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Madison Square Garden?

If you were a fruit, what would you be and why?

Coconut & lime, nice and filling yet refreshing!

Keep up with the guys here. Who knows? With their mass appeal, they’ll probably play MSG soon!
