Philadelphia artist Fortune West recently released the How Did We Get Here? EP through Abandon Building & we present the world premiere viewing of the Golden Flicker Animations animated music video for “Deep Forest” followed by a listen to the radical RUMTUM remix of the single. Fortune West, oka producer Cory Wilson ponders both the natural & the synthetic orders in a creative audio inquiry that observes our evolution from earth to ash & the transcendental experience that is found through the digital lens.
The animated visuals for “Deep Forest” follow the atmospheric track to take flight as if the audience embodied one of the electric-incadesent insects that flutters throughout an arboreal wonderland of magic, intrigue, enchantment that will ignite your imagination. Light-bulb propelled moths & eagle-winged boom-boxes soar into an alchemy of inner-workings that offer up a kind of abstract understanding of our ancient origins & all the other cryptic curiosities of the unknown. From hot-air balloon airships, and countless arrays of mechanical contraptions, Golden Flicker connects the questions of our relationship between the holistic & the synthetic in a dazzling visual ride for the senses. Dive into the unlimited depths of the “Deep Forest” where Fortune West’s pensive single of harmonic vocals & warm skipping percussion is set to a world of creatures

Which brings us to the gorgeous RUMTUM remix of Fortune West’s “Deep Forests” that further re-imagines worlds of endless feelings & fascination. Those lush allusions to secret gardens & clandestine, exotic natural locales are exalted in a form of elaborate waves of keys & rich textural rhythms. RUMTUM redecorates Fortune West’s original in ways that feels absolutely intuitive, like the way one can recall a song heard deep while in a dream that they can vaguely recall from hearing in previously awakened states. The keys & percussion production exhibits the sound of what we imagine a lively & alive forest to sound like where hosts of creatures interact peacefully with one another & their surrounding lush environments of unrelenting splendor (as observed in the previous video debut for the original). RUMTUM zeros in on making he rhythms abide more ethereal patterns that then sends all accompanying stems & addition elements into the throngs of majestic & lush landscapes that form right before your very ears.

Fortune West described the inception of “Deep Forest” with insights about RUMTUM’s remix with the following exclusive words:

The making of “Deep Forest” was an unusual one for me. Generally I tend to agonize over all aspects of a track but this one came together in about 15 minutes. I had been struck with writer’s block all day and was at the end of my patience looking through sounds when I came across the watery vocals that are the basis for the track. From there the sounds just seemed to present themselves to me, and the vibe developed very quickly. I didn’t even think much of the track until I came back to it a couple of days later. It just contains such a natural energy to it, anyone I play it for connects to immediately.
I love what RUMTUM did with the remix. He took the track to a whole new place. It keeps the wistful feel of the original version, but adds a different—almost tropical vibe to it. I envision sitting on a beach at sunset on a clear night when I listen to it. My favorite parts of the remix are the drums. I totally geek out about the way the loose live drums give way to the locked-in 4 on the floor groove. It’s awesome!

RUMTUM also shared the following insights on remixing “Deep Forest”:

Remixing “Deep Forest” was a very natural experience and flowed like it was already written. Some might say it’s only a matter of time to unfold the things that have already happened in your life, that’s kind of what it felt like. I basically cut out some parts I enjoyed that related to my hip hop background and started with playing the samples on the drum pad with sticks, this created a very percussive feeling which allowed my drum recordings to flow right into the mix. The remix for “Deep Forest” was all about driving percussion with organic elements that danced along the top.
