Re:Sounds Vol. 1 – VA

Now-Again’s latest compilation gathers together some vinyl-only remix heat for the CD massive, even going the extra mile with previously released works featuring artists from the Stones Throw roster. Pound for pound, Re:Sounds Vol. 1 outweighs the competition with heavy funk and soul. Todd Terry and Kenny Dope wreck the spot with their remixes of covers by the Kashmere Stage Band; the musicianship remains tight while the vibe encourages you to get loose. Sound In Light’s exquisite “Free Your Mind” is not to be overlooked, a two-minute dreamy escape from everyday doldrums that you’ll want to relive again and again. Expect engaging sounds whenever Koushik appears in the track listing, whether he’s catching the breaks for lyricist Percee P to spit fire over (“Cold Beats”) or basking in the psychedelic haze of a Stark Reality cover (“Too Much Tenderness”). If you’re wishing that Aloe Blacc would rhyme more often, check “Blind World” for some poignant social commentary. Throw in Guilty Simpson wishing out loud on “Before I Die” and Edan talking sex metaphors on “Sagittarius Rapp” and you have an outstanding collection of tracks. Not only for the crate diggers, expect repeated spins once it’s on your sound system.
