Mourn, “Gertrudis, Get Through This”

Post Author: Abbie Hornburg

Teenage Barcelona punks Mourn pack a loud, stark and confrontational sound that consumes the room in their latest video release “Gertrudis, Get Through This”. The lo-fi black and white footage captures an early 90’s vibe reminiscent of the endless cool-girlness of Kim Gordon in Sonic Youth’s “Kool Thing”. In a dark and dim-lit room, vocalist/guitarist Jazz Rodriquez, bassist Leia Rodriquez, guitarist/vocalist Carla Perez Vas and drummer Antonio Echeverria are electric with youthful fearlessness. Roger Guardia directed the monochrome video to keep with the dark, brooding feel of the music with rapid black and white shots of the band. Melodies transition from full of post-punk malaise to desperate howls, echoed by grinding, discordant guitar riffs. The video reaches a climax in a flux of strobe shots over percussive and urgent vocals: “Escape from this, if you need someone to trust”. Every measure and lyric is given the fullest state of passion. “Gertrudis, Get Through This” is a saw-toothed rocker full of authenticity and self-awareness. The forthcoming 7” Gertrudis, will be released on July 17 via Captured Tracks.
