Sneaks, “X.T.Y”

Sneaks

To date in 2015, Sneaks have released two of our favorite records of the year with their self-titled CS, and the Gymnastics LP. Both were released on Sister Polygon, with the latter put out on vinyl by France’s Danger Records. Often comprised solely (but not always) of bassist / programmer Eva Moolchan, the DC area musician is all about pithy punk poetry—new wave punk incantations condensed into tracks that never make it to the two-minute mark, minimally underscored by bass lines and Casio beats. As Nina Mashurova accurately surmised Sneaks sometimes feels like a one-person Household, sometimes like an early draft of a Le Tigre song.

Now Sneaks have entered the video game, producing their first visual accompaniment for the song “X.T.Y”. In the clip, which they asked to premiere in time for Halloween, Moolchan hitches a bike ride with the Devil—literally—to the BMX park. Directed by Ryan Florig, the video quickly devolves into an early-90s pastiche, with random fisheye-lens street scenes, under-the-bridge destruction, and even a wipe out by our star. Like Sneaks music, it’s a lighthearted affair that ends with an exclamation point.
