True Soul compilations

By Blake Gillespie » The story of the Little Rock, AR funk label that could.

True Soul Vol.2

Whether I tell you today or you discover this compilation 20 years from now, it matters not because the True Soul: Deep Sounds From The Left Of Stax compilations are timeless funk excursions. The compilation took over 12 years to complete, as Now-Again developed a personal relationship with True Soul label-owner Lee Anthony.

Names like Albert Smith, Thomas East and John Craig will not set off any memory alarms as these men lived in the shadows of Hayes and Porter over at Stax Records. But, the soul label from Little Rock, AR recorded from the same template as the bigger brothers in Memphis. Perhaps you recall the Gap Band? Yeah, they got their start at True Soul. The compilations are available in either single CD+DVD packages or the 4xLP boxset - a mighty fine collector's item. Presales are taking place at Stones Throw to ship now for CD and July 21 for LPs.
