Beck + Phoenix “Summer Odyssey” Tour @ Concord Pavilion

The Summer Odyssey tour, featuring co-headliners Beck and Phoenix, hit the Toyota Pavilion at Concord in Concord, CA on August 5th. The four-band, five-hour show felt more like a mini festival, as Jenny Lewis and Sir Chloe provided opening sets before Phoenix took the stage as the sun mercifully set on a 100-degree day in Northern California. Phoenix’s last Bay Area show was just last fall, and they played a similar setlist as they continue to tour behind their seventh record, Alpha Zulu. Luckily, that setlist was pretty fantastic, opening with hits like “Lisztomania” and “Lasso” before closing with banger “1901” and Alpha Zulu closer “Identical” as singer Thomas Mars roamed through–and above–the crowd.

Beck followed up with a career-spanning set, running out with his guitar for opener “Devil’s Haircut” and “Mixex Bizness,” then dancing and shuffling his way through “New Pollution.” With his touring band including most of the personnel from his critically-acclaimed 2002 record Sea Change, Beck wheeled off three in a row from that album, “Golden Age,” “Paper Tiger,” and “Lost Cause.” After a rousing rendition of his breakout hit “Loser” and “E-Pro,” Beck was joined onstage by Phoenix for “Odyssey,” the single they released in June, and the “tour theme song.”
