Asleep Country – Fake Opulent

Sound collage experimentalist explores avant psychedelia on hypnotic latest LP

Lost a bit in the shuffle of the new year was the brilliant new album from rising Kazakhstan-based sound collage experimentalist Asleep Country (aka Octa Möbius Sheffner). Fake Opulent kicked off 2023 with a hypnotic set of avant, new age and neo psychedelic sounds: warped, chiming synths, skittering percussion, waves of reverb, and a chaotic barrage of samples. And it’s a crazy long jaunt too – 12 songs, 2 hours and 58 minutes of maximal tribal ambient plunderphonics to turn the brain into jelly.

As you can imagine, a lot of these tracks are behemoth compositions – each their own singular spiritual journey. When all stitched together, it’s an impressive marathon of avant-garde electronica.

Asleep Country described the album in detail in a statement on their Bandcamp, although one section stood out in particular: “Fake Opulent is what happens when beauty comes pouring out of the gutter. When all the extraordinary things contained in the mundane start, without coordination, pouring out as if a great flood.”
