Sir Richard Bishop + Ben Chasny + Chris Corsano = Rangda

rangda

Wikipedia tells us that Rangda is “the demon queen of the leyaks in Bali” who eats children. “Terrifying to behold, the child-eating Rangda leads an army of evil witches against the leader of the forces of good – Barong.”

For Barong we're going to need Jim O'Rourke, Kid Millions, and Nels Cline, or we're looking at some baby-eating in the near future. Rangda is Ben Chasney, Chris Corsano and the great Sir Richard Bishop, a trio that for this leaked track deals in the dense arts of big boner classic rock that plumbs the orgasmic depths of primal guitar freak outs, traces of early heavy metal, heaps of psych rock.

And Santana.

Rangda, “Bull Lore”

“Bull Lore” is the internet-friendly dooby smokin' track but the album also has 8-minute burners like “Fist Family” that are ecstatic exercises in unrelenting noise barrage, and the 15-minute “Plain of Jars” that oscillates between delicate Six Organs of Admittance guitar fingering and the wall of guitar noise that might be considered signature Rangda when musicologists look back at the great Rangda/Barong beefs of 2011. Their album False Flag is out on Drag City in May.
