Rips, "Losing II"

Post Author: JP Basileo

Rips might just be the embodiment of summer nightlife in the Brooklyn music scene. Their S/T debut album comes out June 16 via Faux Discx, and it’s loaded with bustling rhythms and irresistibly catchy melodies, and grounded in an earnestness that reminds you you gotta go home with/live with yourself at the end of the day/night. The record was produced/recorded by Austin Brown (Parquet Courts) and such quality oh-so shows. Opener, “Losing II,” is a perfect introduction to the record, and the band, leaning, but not relying on a main riff that stops and goes in a dancing game of leapfrog. The rest of the instruments come in and it’s like a tonal cinderblock hurtling towards your head. You got not choice but to move it. Guitars gesticulate riff after riff after solo after riff, and it’s the best time ever, until you take a second with the vocals. Lyrics about self-realization and discovery are delivered in emphatic, melodic near monotone. Whether it’s that lead lick by itself, or the powerful surge of the full band’s sound, there’s not a moment of commonplace sound, neither on the track, nor the entirety of the record.
