In support of the release of their new LP, Hexadecagon on October 26, The Octopus Project is taking to the road with their labelmates, Starfucker across the U.S. of A. (and that other country where books cost $5 more).
The band performed Hexadecagon in its entirety twice at this year's SXSW, using a homemade 8-channel surround sound system and 8 video projections featuring film shot by Austin digital artist Wiley Wiggins. It was an ambitious, just-weird-enough-to-work concept and accordingly was well received by all the free beer-swilling taco gremlins in Austin.
And though Hexadecagon obviously won't have its video accompaniment, its first single, “Fugefat”, sounds like Steve Reich having a Nerf gun fight with Battles. Algorithmic but not bloodless, with focused piano licks layered over a methodic back beat. It's just one piece out of the 8 song suite but so far so good.
