Listen: Jake One bridges mainstream and indie

M.O.P. and Slug on the same album? I'm not crying! You're crying!

Looking at Jake One's production credentials warms a hip hop head's heart. He's had a hand in records with Turf Talk, Freeway, I Self Devine, De La Soul and X Clan. How he does it is yet to be determined, but you have to respect the hustle.

Come October 7 Jake One will build a major bridge between the mainstream and indie with White Van Music on Rhymesayers Entertainment.

The album is already turning heads with “The Truth,” which features verses from two of hip hop's best bearded Muslims, Brother Ali and Freeway. (Brother Ali sure is obsessed with the truth.)

MF Doom might be sabotaging his career lately with all the imposter performances, but his two minute verse on “Trap Door” is the kind of Doom trick I am willing to fall for. “That's how it goes in this Modern Life like Rocco” has just replaced Lil Wayne's reference to Gremlins as my favorite one-liner that reminds me of my childhood.
