Fast-rising L.A. band drops kaleidoscopic new wave-alt rock banger

Bittersweethearts – the fast-rising L.A. indie rock band comprised of singer Zoe Infante, guitarist Alyssa Robertson, bassist Zach Andrews, and drummer Daniel Jun – dropped one of their best singles yet today, the kaleidoscopic, new wave-soaked alt-rock banger “Empty.”

The track blends CBGB-era Blondie and poignant Mazzy Star vibes, with fiery lead guitar solos, glistening synths, and confessional lyrics wrapped around infectious hooks and soaring choruses. Nostalgia-fueled synths and revving power chords form the bulk of the track’s sonic palette, along with a killer pulsating rhythm section buoying Infante’s smoky, mesmerizing vocals.

Lyrically, the track touches on the nuances of a crumbling relationship, but with Infante’s intensity and the band’s charged-up instrumentals, the result is more cathartic and empowering than melancholic. Bittersweet, you might even say? “Just wanna make you cry/ It’s better to say goodbye/ Don’t call me on the phone/ It’s better to be alone,” Infante croons over a stratospheric flurry of melodies on the song’s chorus. It’s searing, powerful stuff.

“I was in a failing relationship that was so draining,” Infante shared. “People in life can have that effect on you and it’s hard to see it until you reach a breaking point. This song is about finally realizing that person was not good for me. I’m sure a lot of people can relate to that.”

“Modern-day society holds an unrealistic view of women,” the band added. “A woman has to  believe everything is great with a smile on her face when the guy isn’t pulling his weight. Sooner or later, something gives, and you have the realization that you can transform a situation for the better if you just get out. As hard as it may seem in that moment, the reward of being free of toxicity is so  worth it.”

Bittersweethearts are currently on the West Coast leg of their Running On Empty tour, with stops in Portland, L.A. and San Diego in the coming days. You can check out those tour dates and listen to “Empty” below:
