Doomsday Student, “Lifeboat Blues”

Doomsday Student

“It will sink us” Eric Paul caterwauls as “Lifeboat Blues” dissipates into the abyss, leaving the listener guessing as to what might have happened to that fateful dinghy. The repetitive motion of the song tilts us towards the crashing waves, as guitars swirl and Paul’s story of a small boat carrying too much weight comes to life. The travelers upon this doomed vessel have a difficult choice to make. It’s that sort of pensive anticipation that drives Doomsday Student’s music; filled with driving percussion and shrieking guitars—and of course the self-flagellating lyricism of Paul—it’s the perfect accessory to any weirdo-punk record collection.

Consisting of three ex-Arab On Radar members, and three of the equally awesome then-side-project Chinese Stars, you could say the members of Doomsday Student are Providence Rhode Island punk royalty at this point. It’s a wonder anyone would want to kick them off the boat.

Doomsday Student’s sophomore album, A Walk Through Hysteria Park, will be released October 21 by the venerable Three One G Records and is available for pre-order now. Eric Paul has also released a new, limited edition spoken word 7″ entitled “The Man Who Can’t Say No” on Heartwork Press (after a previous spoken word cassette for Bathetic).
