Rising San Diego indie band releases dreamy, synthy debut LP

Earlier this year we included the San Diego band THE FAZES on our list of Rising Artists To Watch in 2023, having been charmed by their synth-laced DIY indie rock vibes on tracks like “Camera Shy” and “Blue Days.” Now, the rising group has leveled up with their debut album, the dreamy and diverse Underground Starz, out now via Egg Records.

The album feels like a strong, fully-formed culmination of the sounds that they’ve developed on previous singles. There’s a hypnotic swirl of synthpop, dream pop, and indie rock wafting within most of the tracks on this album, with opener “Welcome 2 Dirt” containing a particularly moody goth vibe to it. “La Culpa” carries a bit of a shimmering disco tinge to it, with soothing vocals floating atop propulsive synth notes, funky basslines and swelling percussion. The album’s title track, meanwhile, is a languid, laid-back new wave dance track that recalls the swooning cool of Men I Trust, with intricate guitar chords weaving between a flurry of drum machines quirks.

Overall, Underground Starz is a nice leap forward for THE FAZES, establishing them as one of San Diego’s most potent up-and-coming acts emerging from the DIY sphere. You can purchase the album HERE and stream it below:
